Russia Advocates Diplomacy, Unity to Ease Middle East Tensions

(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that pursuing negotiations, unity, and balanced approaches is the best way to safeguard Middle East interests amid rising tensions caused by US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Speaking at a meeting of the Gorchakov Fund Board of Trustees, Lavrov highlighted Russia’s “very good, long-standing partnerships” with Gulf countries and Iran.

“And, of course, we are not indifferent to what is happening in relations between Iran and its neighbors," he added, noting that Moscow is sharing its assessments of the situation with both Iran and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Lavrov pointed to Russia’s ongoing initiative to establish a security framework for the Persian Gulf, designed to encourage cooperation between Arab monarchies and Iran. The plan includes measures to enhance military transparency and build confidence.

“These essentially simple steps, already tested in various regions of the world,” Lavrov said, “will help ease regional tensions.”

“We are convinced that this path – one of negotiations, unity and balancing interests – serves the interests of the entire region, one of the most important regions in the world, rather than attempts to force any country, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran, to follow dictates from abroad,” he emphasized.

The regional escalation has persisted since February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched a joint offensive against Iran, resulting in over 1,340 deaths, including that of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with repeated drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military forces.
