India, Canada Strengthen Ties with Defense Talks, Strategic Agreements
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the capital to discuss the growing partnership between the two nations.
Following the talks, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that the meetings produced 25 distinct outcomes and announcements, notably the establishment of the India–Canada defense dialogue.
A joint communiqué highlighted that both sides plan to “institutionalize” this dialogue as a platform to exchange perspectives on defense strategies, regional and global security trends, and broader strategic considerations, aiming to explore avenues for deeper defense collaboration.
As noted in a statement from the Canadian side, Modi and Carney also committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation on security and law enforcement.
“This includes issues of mutual concern to Canada and India, such as the illegal flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl precursors, and transnational organised criminal networks,” the statement said.
Carney emphasized that Canada “will continue to take measures to combat transnational repression,” according to the release.
Among the agreements signed was a long-term arrangement with Canada for the supply of uranium ore concentrates, which India’s External Affairs Ministry described as a “major step toward the expansion of nuclear energy in India.”
In addition, the two nations formalized a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on critical minerals.
