Ivan Osterman’s monument is unveiled in Moscow

(MENAFN) A monument honoring Ivan Osterman, the 18th-century Russian statesman who served as minister of foreign affairs under Empress Catherine the Great, was unveiled on Monday at his former Moscow estate. The ceremony followed earlier commemorations this year by the Foreign Ministry marking the 300th anniversary of his birth.

Osterman was the son of Heinrich Ostermann, a Westphalian who joined Russia’s diplomatic service under Tsar Peter the Great, adopted the name Andrey, and eventually became minister of foreign affairs. Ivan Osterman began his diplomatic career in the late 1750s after the family regained influence following his father’s political setbacks. In his thirties, he spent several years at the Russian embassy in Paris before being appointed ambassador to Sweden, both key posts given France’s status as a strategic rival and Sweden’s importance in regional diplomacy.

He served 14 years as envoy to the Swedish court, earning state recognition and positioning himself for higher office. In 1783, Osterman became head of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs, replacing Nikita Panin. He remained in charge of Russia’s foreign policy for the remainder of Catherine’s reign and was appointed chancellor by her successor, Emperor Paul I, in 1796, though he resigned a year later.

The statue now stands at Osterman’s former mansion, currently the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts. Its unveiling coincided with the opening of a new exhibition dedicated to his life and career, attended by senior officials including presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky and Deputy Foreign Minister Evgeny Ivanov.
