Poll Reveals Ukrainians’ Confidence in NATO Weakens
The study was carried out by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) over the period from November 26 to December 13. Researchers gathered responses from nearly 550 Ukrainian residents across diverse age brackets and social backgrounds, and the findings were made public on Monday.
According to the results, trust in NATO has dropped sharply. Only 34% of those questioned stated that they had confidence in the alliance, marking a decline from 43% recorded in December of the previous year.
Confidence in NATO’s principal member state, the United States, fell even more dramatically. Just 21% of respondents said they trusted the US, a steep decrease from 41% reported a year earlier.
This downturn in public confidence coincides with ongoing diplomatic initiatives by the US administration aimed at bringing an end to the fighting between Kiev and Moscow.
Washington has already dismissed the possibility of Ukraine being accepted into NATO in the near future and has also ruled out deploying American troops on Ukrainian territory.
For years, aspirations to join NATO have been central to the rhetoric of Ukraine’s pro-Western political figures, with Kiev officially submitting an application for membership in 2022. Russia, however, views NATO’s eastward enlargement as one of the primary drivers of the Ukraine conflict and has consistently insisted that Kiev should formally adopt a neutral status instead.
