Western Australia fights bushfires amid communication outage
On Monday, the state’s emergency website temporarily went offline due to a technical issue, which officials said was caused by a data processing problem. The site has since been restored, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
Approximately 250 firefighters are actively responding to blazes in the Midwest, particularly near Warradarge and Mogumber, while warnings have also been issued in Boonanarring, Cullalla, and parts of Chittering and Bindoon. Evacuation centers have been established in areas including Gingin and Mandurah. By 8 pm local time (1200 GMT), nine fires were listed at the "watch and act" level, prompting authorities to advise residents on evacuation and preparedness.
DFES Assistant Commissioner Paul Carr said that the fires in Nambeelup and Chittering were likely ignited by lightning strikes. The Warradarge fire has already burned more than 7,000 hectares and led to temporary closures of parts of the Brand Highway. Meanwhile, earlier warnings for Brigadoon and Gidgegannup have been downgraded.
A fire in Chittering, believed to have been deliberately set, has also been downgraded to an advice level as firefighters worked to contain it, according to DFES incident controller Murray McBride.
The bushfires are occurring in the context of widespread power outages caused by storms since Saturday, which have impacted up to 115,000 properties across the state.
