Trump Claims Progress in Ukraine Peace Talks
According to Trump, his administration last month introduced a proposed framework for a peace settlement designed to bring the fighting in Ukraine to an end. The plan, which has reportedly undergone several revisions, outlines conditions under which Kiev would abandon its ambitions to join NATO and relinquish its claims to Crimea as well as the Donbass territories of Lugansk and Donetsk. These regions became part of Russia following referendums. In exchange, Ukraine would be offered security assurances, although the exact nature of those guarantees has not been specified.
When questioned on Monday about what “incentive” Ukraine would have to surrender territory, Trump implied that the issue may already be effectively resolved.
“Well, they’ve already lost the territory, you know, to be honest. I mean, the territory is lost,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “But in terms of security guarantee… We’re working on the security guarantees so the war doesn’t start up again.”
Trump also revealed that he has recently engaged in direct discussions with Putin and expressed his belief that Moscow is genuinely interested in concluding the conflict.
“At this moment, Russia wants to get it [ended]. And the problem is they’ll want to get it ended, and then all of a sudden they won’t. And Ukraine will want to get it ended, and all of a sudden they won’t. So we have to get them on the same page,” he said.
