Zelenskyy Signals Readiness for Wartime Presidential Vote

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday that he is "ready" to conduct presidential elections within 60–90 days, provided that both security and legal prerequisites are guaranteed.

He called on the US and European allies to assist in establishing the conditions necessary for holding an election during wartime.

Addressing reporters while traveling from Rome to Poland, Zelenskyy explained that the US seeks to provide Ukraine with security assurances, saying they want “so that we can feel it, so that we have weapons … air defense systems … and sanctions if anything happens.”

However, he noted that the specifics of these commitments are still under negotiation.

Zelenskyy also highlighted that certain NATO members remain cautious about Ukraine’s potential accession.

“We are realists. We truly want to join NATO—that’s fair. But we know for sure that neither the US nor several other countries see Ukraine in the alliance yet. And Russia, of course, will never see us there,” he remarked.

The president reaffirmed that decisions regarding elections are exclusively for Ukrainians to make, emphasizing that the topic had not arisen in his recent discussions with American officials, despite public remarks by US President Donald Trump.

Trump had suggested it was “time” for Ukraine to hold elections, claiming Kyiv was “using war not to hold an election” and warning that delaying a vote could weaken Ukraine’s democratic framework.

Zelenskyy dismissed accusations that Ukraine is postponing elections for political gain, insisting that the ongoing conflict “is unrelated to who holds office.”
