Russia Says Tomahawk Missiles Will Not End Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Russia has dismissed the idea of supplying Ukraine with U.S.-made long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles as a path to ending the war, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Her comments came after CNN reported that the Pentagon had cleared the White House to send Tomahawks to Kyiv, concluding the move would not significantly deplete U.S. stockpiles. Despite the approval, U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to provide the missiles, which are capable of striking deep inside Russian territory.

“As the current situation and previous years have shown, it is clear that militarization and arms deliveries – especially to a terrorist regime – will not lead to a settlement. Moreover, such actions would contradict the campaign promises made by the current US administration,” Zakharova told reporters on Saturday.

Trump has repeatedly pledged to mediate an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and revived direct talks with Russia earlier this year. However, no significant progress came from his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August or the renewed negotiations in Istanbul.

Recently, Trump postponed a planned summit with Putin in Budapest and imposed further sanctions on Russia’s oil exports. At the same time, he rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request for Tomahawks, citing U.S. defense needs: the missiles are required “to protect our country.” Trump also emphasized that Ukrainian forces would need extensive training to operate the weapons. “We know how to use it, and we’re not going to be teaching other people,” he said.

Last month, Putin warned that delivering Tomahawks to Ukraine would represent a further escalation and promised a “very strong response.”
