Putin reveals succession of nuclear-capable underwater drone test

(MENAFN) Russia says it has completed a successful trial of a new nuclear-capable underwater drone, President Vladimir Putin announced, describing the test as a major technical breakthrough.

Putin, speaking during a visit to a military hospital in Moscow, said trials of the Poseidon system were carried out on Tuesday and hailed the results. “When it comes to speed and depth, there is nothing comparable to this unmanned vehicle anywhere the world, and it is unlikely to appear anytime soon,” he said.

The president claimed that, at present, “there are no methods of intercepting” the drone. He added that engineers had, for the first time, both launched the vehicle from a submarine using its booster and started its onboard nuclear power unit: “For the first time, we succeeded not only in launching it from a submarine using its booster engine, but also in starting its nuclear power unit, which provided energy to the vehicle for a certain period of time. This is a tremendous success,” he said.

Putin went on to assert that the Poseidon’s abilities “significantly exceed the power of even our most promising Sarmat intercontinental range missile.”

According to reports, the Poseidon program — first revealed in 2018 — is a deep-sea, unmanned system powered by a nuclear reactor that is claimed to give it an effectively unlimited range. Descriptions circulating in recent coverage say the 20-metre, 100-tonne drone can reportedly reach very high speeds, dive beyond 1,000 metres, travel at extremely low speeds to evade detection, and could be used to strike coastal targets or generate catastrophic waves.
