Polish army intercepts Russian plane on reconnaissance mission

(MENAFN) Polish Air Force jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea, the Polish Army said Wednesday.

In a statement on the US social media platform X, the army said the Russian Il-20 plane was operating in international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off.

“On October 28, 2025, a pair of on-duty MiG-29 Air Force fighters successfully intercepted, visually identified, and escorted a Russian Federation aircraft out of the area of responsibility,” the statement read. The army noted that the Russian aircraft did not enter Polish airspace.

European nations have recently accused Moscow of being behind a series of drone incursions into their territories—claims that Russia has denied.

Tensions in the region spiked following a Sept. 9 incident in which about 20 drones reportedly crossed into Polish airspace during a large-scale strike on Ukraine. NATO fighter jets subsequently joined Polish aircraft in joint patrol missions.

Other NATO members bordering the Baltic Sea—including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—have also reported similar airspace violations in recent months.
