Former S. Korean Leader Yoon Interrogated Over North Korea Drone
Yoon, currently in detention, was questioned by Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk’s office, media reported. However, Yoon chose not to answer any questions, invoking his right to remain silent.
His attorney stated, “Yoon had ‘stated his position fully during the first and second rounds of questioning with regard to key questions from the special counsel, and is refusing to testify in response to all further questions.’”
In a sudden move on December 3 last year, Yoon declared martial law, but withdrew the order just hours later after the National Assembly voted for its repeal. Prosecutors are probing claims that Yoon ordered drones to be sent to North Korea in October 2024, allegedly to provoke retaliation and justify a future martial law declaration.
North Korea accused South Korea last year of flying a drone over Pyongyang, releasing images of a downed unmanned aerial vehicle. The regime requested the International Civil Aviation Organization investigate the incident, but the UN agency dismissed the claim in April.
The Yoon administration has consistently declined to confirm or deny whether Seoul dispatched the drone.
Yoon faces insurrection charges tied to his martial law decree and has been detained since his second arrest on July 10. He sought bail last month, but the court denied the request.
Since imposing martial law last December, Yoon was arrested again on July 10, ignored multiple summonses on September 24, September 30, and most recently October 1.
In a related development, a Seoul court on Wednesday rejected an arrest warrant for former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, accused of involvement in Yoon’s failed martial law attempt.
