S. Korea Moves to Restore Rollout of Inter-Korean Pact in Stages

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Monday directed government ministries to begin a phased rollout of existing agreements with North Korea, marking a cautious but deliberate step toward re-engagement with Pyongyang, the presidential office announced.

During a cabinet session, President Lee Jae-myung directed government ministries to begin carrying out inter-Korean agreements in phases, starting with those deemed immediately achievable. He emphasized a gradual approach to easing tensions while upholding strong national defense, outlining that incremental actions could help rebuild trust, open channels for peace, and ultimately create the groundwork for joint development between the two Koreas.

The announcement follows Lee's Liberation Day address last week, in which he pledged to pursue consistent measures aimed at easing inter-Korean tensions and rebuilding trust.

As part of this renewed approach, Lee also said the government will work gradually to reinstate the September 19 military agreement, a key outcome of the 2018 inter-Korean summit. The deal was designed to prevent accidental military confrontations and strengthen confidence between the two sides.
