Trump gets back at it with Musk’s criticism
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote on social media, targeting Musk, the CEO of Tesla and a former major donor to his campaign.
Trump’s comments came after Musk criticized Trump’s expansive “Big Beautiful Bill,” warning that reducing credits for electric vehicles and clean energy would be “incredibly destructive” and calling it “political suicide for the Republican Party.”
“Elon Musk knew, long before he so strongly Endorsed me for President, that I was strongly against the EV Mandate. It is ridiculous, and was always a major part of my campaign. Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one,” Trump said.
Although there is no US law mandating ownership of electric vehicles, government credits are designed to encourage their purchase.
On Tuesday, Musk also took to X to criticize lawmakers supporting the bill, saying those who campaigned on reducing spending but voted for it should “hang their heads in shame” and predicted they would face defeat in next year’s primaries.
Trump further attacked Musk’s SpaceX government contracts, suggesting the US could save “a FORTUNE” by cutting back on rocket launches, satellites, and electric car production, and jokingly proposed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—Musk’s controversial government downsizing initiative—should review the spending.
Musk stepped down from his government role in May, shortly before engaging in a public online dispute with Trump over the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk strongly condemned.
