Four Get Detained in Istanbul Over Cartoon Depicting Prophet Muhammad
These arrests were part of a broader inquiry initiated independently by Istanbul’s prosecutors on charges of "publicly insulting religious values."
The controversial illustration appeared in the June 26 issue of the satirical magazine Leman.
The cartoon referenced the recent tensions between Israel and Iran and depicted both the Prophet Muhammad and the Prophet Moses clasping hands over a devastated cityscape.
The cartoon provoked widespread anger. Footage circulated on social media showed crowds of demonstrators assembling outside Leman’s Istanbul premises, with some individuals attempting to storm the building.
Posting on X, Fahrettin Altun, head of Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, harshly criticized the cartoon's publication, declaring that Türkiye "will not allow these reckless individuals who immorally attack the lofty values of our nation any opportunity.”
Altun further emphasized, "This insult and disrespect towards our Prophet, the only guide of Muslims, cannot be masked with freedom of the press," stating that "this sick mentality" will "definitely" be held accountable before the law.
