Trump’s “America First” philosophy could cause fourteen million deaths
Researchers projected that around one-third of the expected premature deaths could be among children.
The study’s co-author described the potential impact on low- and middle-income nations as a shock "comparable in scale to a global pandemic or a major armed conflict."
According to statements made in March, over 80% of the programs managed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have been terminated. The Trump administration has defended these actions as efforts to eliminate what it considers unnecessary government expenditures.
These reductions, which have drawn widespread condemnation from humanitarian groups, were coordinated under the supervision of Elon Musk, who at the time was directing a campaign to reduce the size of the federal workforce.
Throughout his second term, Trump has maintained that foreign aid spending should reflect his “America First” philosophy.
According to the research team, the elimination of funding from USAID could potentially disrupt—and even undo—two decades of progress in health outcomes for populations in vulnerable regions.
Their analysis estimated that from 2001 to 2021, U.S. aid efforts helped prevent more than 90 million deaths in developing countries.
Using a forecast based on an 83% reduction in USAID funding—reflecting the figure cited in March—the researchers warned of a "staggering" outcome: more than 14 million preventable deaths by 2030.
This number is projected to include over 4.5 million children under the age of five.
