EU Prolongs Sectoral Sanctions on Russia Until 31 January

(MENAFN) The European Council confirmed on Monday that the European Union will extend its targeted sanctions against Russia for an additional six months.

"The Council today renewed the EU restrictive measures in view of the Russian Federation’s continuing actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine for a further 6 months, until 31 January 2026," the council said in an official statement.

First imposed in 2014 after Russia’s unlawful annexation of Crimea, these sanctions were expanded in 2022 with the onset of the Ukraine conflict. The sectoral restrictions impact various areas, including trade, finance, energy, technology, transportation, and luxury goods.

The sanctions also cover a ban on Russian seaborne oil imports, the removal of key Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment system, and a ban on Kremlin-affiliated media in the EU.

"The EU today officially agreed to extend sectoral sanctions on Russia," said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas via X.

Kallas reiterated the EU's determination to "pile pressure" on Russia to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

"Each sanction weakens Russia’s ability to wage war," she added.
