“Jordanian Kitchen” initiative distributes to Gazans fresh bread

(MENAFN) A pilot bakery has begun operating in northern Gaza as part of a humanitarian initiative by the Jordanian Campaign in coordination with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO), aimed at addressing urgent food shortages faced by local residents.

In a statement cited by general sources, the campaign announced that efforts are underway to overcome ongoing logistical and operational barriers in order to keep the bakery functioning on a near-daily basis. The objective is to supply as many families as possible with fresh bread as humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate across the enclave.

The initiative forms part of a broader plan to set up bakeries in multiple regions of Gaza. According to the campaign, three bakeries have been established—one in the central area, one in the south in Khan Younis, and another in Jabalia in the north. While two of them are currently operational, the third in Jabalia was destroyed during recent bombardments.

With Gaza experiencing a steep decline in flour and bread availability, the campaign described the bakery project as a vital lifeline. “Ongoing difficulties in aid delivery, shortages of basic supplies, and rising prices have left many residents without access to essential food staples,” it stated.

Under the “Jordanian Kitchen” initiative, food assistance is being distributed to families throughout northern, central, and southern Gaza. This includes hot meals and daily bread deliveries to displaced and vulnerable populations.

JHCO has also launched a daily bakery in southern Gaza in cooperation with the Jordanian aid campaign, designed to support displaced families facing closed borders, flour scarcity, and soaring food costs. This bakery produces between 35,000 and 40,000 loaves of bread each day, benefiting thousands.

Jordan’s wider humanitarian response in Gaza also includes the “Restoring Hope” initiative, introduced in September 2024 under Royal directives. This programme is focused on providing prosthetic limbs to individuals injured during the war. It is a joint effort involving the Royal Medical Services, the Hakeem electronic health programme, and JHCO.

In addition, Jordan runs two military field hospitals in Gaza. The first, located in the north, was established in 2009 following the 2008 conflict. A second hospital was set up in Khan Younis in November 2023 during the height of the war that began on October 7, 2023.
