Trump threatens with funding cuts over NYC mayor stance
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that federal funding to New York City could be withheld if Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani fails to meet certain expectations once in office, according to recent reports.
During an interview broadcast on Sunday, Trump took aim at Mamdani—who won the Democratic primary last Tuesday—by saying, "If he does get in, I am going to be president, and he is going to have to do the right thing, or they are not getting any money. He has got to do the right thing."
Trump extended his warning beyond Mamdani, suggesting that any future mayor of New York would face similar consequences if they don’t act in a way the federal government approves. "Whoever is mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves, or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially," he stated.
This isn’t the first time Trump has threatened to cut federal funds—he has previously issued similar ultimatums to states and academic institutions that didn’t align with his administration’s agenda.
He also attacked Mamdani’s political beliefs, saying, "He is a communist. I think it is very bad for New York." Trump continued, "It is shocking," adding, "I used to say we will never have a socialist in this country, no, but we will have a communist."
Mamdani, who recently defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary election, is now on track to become the first Muslim mayor in New York City's history. Known for his strong pro-Palestinian views, Mamdani has long been critical of Israeli policies. He co-founded a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine while in college and took part in a 2023 hunger strike near the White House, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
