Provided by AGPThe online study, carried out by the Japan Institute for Promotion of Digital Economy and Community, found that 47.8% of women in their 60s and 70s said they would rather consult AI for interpersonal concerns than speak with a human, according to reports.
By comparison, 37.3% of women in the same age category said they would choose to discuss such matters with another person.
Despite those findings, human interaction remained the preferred option overall among respondents from all age groups and genders. Around 45.8% said they favored advice from people, while 36.5% selected AI, with many participants describing artificial intelligence as more neutral and less judgmental.
Among older men, the results differed notably, with 57% saying they would rather seek guidance from another person, while 25.2% indicated a preference for AI assistance.
Atsushi Nakagomi, a researcher focused on artificial intelligence and human health at Chiba University, said the outcome involving elderly women came as a surprise.
“AI makes people feel more comfortable about opening up, as they might feel free to seek advice without worrying about how their comments will be perceived,” he said.
The survey was conducted online in mid-January and collected responses from 1,449 individuals aged between 18 and 79 throughout Japan.
